Taiwan Launches Digital Nomad Visa! Attracting Global Young Talent to Work and Travel

To attract global talent to Taiwan, the National Development Council has launched the “Digital Nomad Visa,” which officially started in January 2025. Those who meet any of the following three conditions are eligible to apply: have previously been issued a digital nomad visa from another country, are between the ages…

The pandemic has accelerated digital development, making remote work increasingly common. In recent years, the concept of “digital nomads” has emerged worldwide, becoming a key target group for the National Development Council (NDC) in Taiwan.

NDC Minister Kung-Ching Liu previously stated that an estimated 35 million digital nomads exist globally. By relaxing relevant regulations and first bringing them to Taiwan to work remotely, the initial goal is to boost tourism and consumption. If they fall in love with Taiwan, they may choose to stay. The hope is that out of 100,000 digital nomads entering Taiwan, at least 10,000 will remain.

NDC Introduces Digital Nomad Visa to Attract Remote Workers

To this end, the NDC has collaborated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to introduce the “Digital Nomad Visa,” extending the stay duration to a 3+3 model, allowing a maximum stay of six months without requiring departure. The visa officially takes effect in January 2025.

According to the “Regulations for Foreigners Applying for a Digital Nomad Visa to Taiwan,” eligible applicants must be foreign nationals covered by Taiwan’s visa-free entry policy. They must engage in remote digital work and not provide services for businesses or employers within Taiwan. Applicants must meet at least one of the following three conditions:

  1. Have previously been issued a digital nomad visa by another country and can provide proof.
  2. Be at least 30 years old with an annual income of at least USD 40,000 (approximately TWD 1.31 million) in either of the past two years.
  3. Be between 20 and 30 years old with an annual income of at least USD 20,000 (approximately TWD 650,000) in either of the past two years.

The NDC further explained that applicants must submit relevant supporting documents, including proof of remote digital work meeting the above criteria, a Taiwan visa application form, and a foreign passport valid for at least six months. Applications can be submitted to MOFA or Taiwan’s overseas embassies. More details can be found on the MOFA website under “Application Procedures for Foreign Nationals Applying for a Digital Nomad Stay Visa.”

Tainan Becomes the First City for Digital Nomads, Showcasing Cultural and Culinary Appeal

The NDC is currently working with local governments, and in December 2024, Tainan was announced as the first city in Taiwan to welcome digital nomads.

Tainan was chosen as the launch city for the digital nomad initiative. As Taiwan’s oldest city, it uniquely blends Eastern and Western cultures and is renowned as a “Gourmet Capital” with a rich variety of local delicacies. It is home to cultural and natural attractions such as the Confucius Temple, Anping Fort, and Sicao Green Tunnel. With well-developed smart city infrastructure, Tainan allows digital nomads to enjoy the local culture while working remotely.

Additionally, Taitung, with its stunning coastline and ideal surfing conditions, has long been a favorite destination for foreign visitors. The NDC revealed that Taitung will also become a designated city for the digital nomad program.
